South Island: Picton to Hanmer Springs

The first day on the South Island was Monday, 20th of August. As we hadn't really made any plans in advance, we just drove westwards from Picton, planning to have a look at the north-western part first. We passed Nelson withouth really looking at things as the weather was still horrible. We had a stopover at Motueka which is a really pretty place and the weather was quite nice for a change.

Der erste Tag auf der Südinsel war Montag, der 20. August. Da wir nicht wirklich konkrete Pläne hatten, fuhren wir erstmal Richtung Westen um uns den Nordwesten der Insel zuerst anzuschauen. Wegen des schlechten Wetters sind wir ohne wirklich was auf dem Weg anzuschauen nach Nelson und schließlich nach Motueka gekommen, wo wir dann für eine Nacht im Caravan Park eingecheckt haben. Der Ort ist recht schön und das Wetter war dort dann zur Abwechslung auch mal ganz schön.

Somewhere along the way from Picton to Motueka.

From Motueka, we continued on our way to the north west. Our next stop was at Harwoods Hole, a giant sinkhole and one of the largest caves in the country with a vertical drop of 176m. Just 3 km before you reach the car park from where the walk starts to the sinkhole, some scenes for Lord of the Rings were filmed. In the film, it was the Chetwood Forest - the scenes where Aragorn leads the hobbits into the wilds (after leaving Bree) and the hobbits leaving the Shire were filmed there.

Von Motueka aus sind wir weiter Richung Nordwesten gefahren. Der nächste Stopp war beim Harwoods Hole, einem gigantischen Sinkloch (kann man das so übersetzen?), das auch eine der größten Höhlen des Landes ist, mit einem vertikalen Fall von 176m. Kurz bevor man zum Parkplatz kommt, von wo aus der Walk beginnt, ist eine Gegend, in der ein paar Szenen von Herr der Ringe gefilmt wurden. Im Film stellt diese Gegend den Chetwood Forest dar - die Szenen wo Aragorn die Hobbits in die Wildnis führt (nachdem sie Bree verlassen haben) und wie die Hobbits das Auenland verlassen wurden z.B. hier gefilmt.

We spent the next day in the town of Takaka and headed towards Farewell Spit in the late afternoon but we didn't get very far as a signpost towards the Te Waikoropupu Springs caught our attention. We drove to the car park and were immensely surprised NOT to find any "no camping" signs. We walked to the springs which are not only unbelievably large (NZ's largest) but are also said to be the cleanest (!) in the world. We spent the night at the car park to go for another walk in the morning.

Wir haben den nächsten Tag im Ort Takaka verbracht und sind gegen späten Nachmittag Richtung Farewell Spit aufgebrochen. Weit gekommen sind wir aber nicht, weil ein Wegweiser zu den Te Waikoropupu Springs unser Interesse geweckt hat. Wir sind zum Parkplatz gefahren und waren extrem überrascht, keine "Camping verboten" Schilder zu finden. Wir sind zu den Quellen spaziert, die nicht nur unglaublich groß (Neuseelands größte Quelle) sondern auch die saubersten (!) Quellen der Welt sind. Die Nacht haben wir auf dem Parkplatz verbracht - auch um am nächsten Morgen nochmal dort spazieren zu gehen.

On the way to the Farewell Spit we we took a little detour to Clifton to buy some fresh veggies from a farm shop. In the end we didn't get any as nothing looked really flash but Clifton was quite nice nevertheless.

Auf dem Weg zum Farewell Spit haben wir einen kleinen Abstecher nach Clifton gemacht um frisches Gemüse bei einem Farm Shop zu kaufen. Im Endeffekt haben wir nix gekauft, weil's nicht wirklich gut aussah, aber Clifton war trotzdem ganz schön.

We had planned to go to the tip of the Spit but it was a bit disappointing as you needed a permit/guided tour to actually go there. At least we saw the point from where we stood. :)

Eigentlich wollten wir bis zur Spitze vom Spit aber das war etwas enttäuschend, weil man eine Erlaubnis/geführte Tour brauchte um dort überhaupt hinzukommen. Naja, wenigstens haben wir die Spitze von unserem Standpunkt aus sehen können. :)

On the way down from the Cape, we stopped at Motueka for another night before heading inland towards Murchison.

Auf dem Weg zurück vom Cape haben wir nochmal in Motueka übernachtet bevor wir dann Inland nach Murchison fuhren.

Every time we decided to stop and have a look at things we changed our minds again because of the horrible weather. At one stop (at O'Sullivans Bridge), we had a nice encounter though. This little guy came out of the shrubs hoping to find some food.

Jedesmal wenn wir uns entschlossen hatten etwas anzuschauen haben wir unsere Meinung wieder geändert, weil das Wetter so scheußlich war. Bei einem Stopp (bei O'Sullivans Bridge) hatten wir aber eine nette Begegnung. Dieser kleine Kerl kam aus dem Gebüsch in der Hoffnung etwas zu Fressen zu finden.

We continued to Westport, the rain following our every move. Our plan was to have a look up and down the coast but when we got to Westport I talked to Steve on the phone and he checked the weather forecast for me. It was shocking! For the next 10 days (that's as far as the forecast goes) it was just rain, rain and more rain. He checked the forecast for the east coast, too. It was the exact opposite: only sun... So, as the distances here are nowhere like those in Australia, we decided to cut inland to the east coast. So, back towards Murchison but from Inangahua Junction we drove south, passing Reefton and Springs Junction before coming to Hanmer Springs.

Wir fuhren weiter nach Westport mit dem Regen als ständigem Begleiter. Unser Plan war eigentlich die Westküste hoch und runter zu fahren aber als wir in Westport angekommen waren und ich mit Steve telefoniert hab, hat der für uns die Wettervorhersage gecheckt. Es sah nicht gut aus! Für die nächsten 10 Tage (soweit ging die Vorhersage) nur Regen, Regen und noch mehr Regen. Er hat für uns auch die Vorhersage für die Ostküste angeschaut. Das exakte Gegenteil: nur Sonne... Da zum Glück die Strecken hier kein Verlgeich zu denen in Australien sind, haben wir uns entschlossen unsere Pläne über den Haufen zu werfen und stattdessen direkt rüber zur Ostküste zu fahren. Das hieß also erstmal wieder zurück Richtung Murchison, aber auf halber Strecke (bei Inangahua Junction) dann nach Süden. Wir fuhren vorbei and Reefton und Springs Junction bevor wir schließlich nach Hanmer Springs kamen.

We slept along rest areas at the side of the road again. We had the idea to go to some natural hot springs which were marked on the map just along the way, not far from the road. It would have been really nice to warm up a bit in this cold and wet weather but we couldn't find them, unfortunately. Later, we found out that they are actually somewhere in the river bed or at the river bank and you need to dig them out with a spade. That would have been even more awesome. Maybe some other time... While looking for the springs we found a swing bridge which was nice, too.

Wir haben dann wieder auf rest areas am Straßenrand geschlafen. Wir hatten die Idee, zu natürlichen heißen Quellen zu gehen, die auf der Karte markiert waren und nicht weit von der Straße sein sollten. Das wäre sehr schön gewesen um sich ein bisschen aufzuwärmen in diesem kalten und nassen Wetter. Leider haben wir sie aber nicht gefunden. Später haben wir rausgefunden, dass diese Quellen direkt im Flussbett oder Flussufer "versteckt" sind und man die mit einem Spaten ausgraben muss. Das wäre ja noch toller gewesen. Naja, vielleich ein anderes Mal... Als wir die Quellen gesucht haben, haben wir immerhin eine Hängebrücke gefunden. Auch nett.

Hanmer Springs was awesome. As we still had a bit of money left, we decided it was time for a treat. We booked a Quad Bike Tour and the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pool for the same day. First get dirty and cold and then jump into hot pools afterwards. :)

The Quad Adventure description reads as follows: "... We have exclusive rights to a 26km purpose-made track including river crossings, hill climbs, jumps & humps in a spectacular breathtaking setting!"

Hanmer Springs war super. Da wir schon noch etwas Geld übrig hatten, haben wir uns entschieden, dass es mal Zeit für was Besonderes ist. Wir haben eine Quad Bike Tour und einen Besuch in den Themal Pools für den gleichen Tag gebucht. Erst dreckig machen und dann in die heißen Pools springen. :)

Die Beschreibung für die Quad Tour war wie folgt: "...Wir haben die Exklusiv-Rechte an einem 26km langen, eigens für die Tour gebildeten Track, der Flussdurchquerungen, Hügel und Sprünge beinhaltet und das alles in einer spektakulären, atemberaubenden Landschaft!"

The Thermal Pools have 15 open-air thermal pools of varying temperatures, the hottest (and smelliest...) being the sulphur pools (40 - 42°C). The most challenging part here was to get from one pool to the next in the freezing cold air.

Die Thermal Pools haben 15 Freiluft-Pools mit verschiedenen Temparaturen anzubieten. Die heißesten (aber auch stinkendsten) sind die Schwefel Pools (40 - 42°). Die größte Herausforderung hier war von einem zum nächsten Pool zu kommen bei der eisigen Luft draußen.

The highlight was definitely the quad bike tour though. For 2.5 hours we went through farm land, through little streams and mud holes!!! and climbed up (rather steep) hills. It was brilliant. The only thing was that there a couple from Christchurch on the same tour and the girl was quite a bit of a city chick. She was nice enough but had no idea what she was doing most of the time. She had troubles driving straight even and went off the track into some shrubs a few times in the beginning. She also didn't dare to get some speed up so we kind of had to adjust to her pace for most of the trip. Anyway, in the end she was doing a bit better and enjoyed herself, too I think. And Markus and me found ways to mess and play around quite a bit.In the end we were covered in mud from head to toe... The trip was great fun and I definitely want to do another trip sometime.

Das Highlight war aber definitiv die Quad Bike Tour. Für 2,5 Stunden ging's über Farmland, durch kleine Bäche und Schlammlöcher !!! und auf relativ steile Hügel. Es war fantastisch. Das einzig Negative war, dass neben uns auch ein Paar aus Christchurch an der Tour teilgenommen hat und das Mädel war schon irgendwie ein bisschen "tussig". Ich meine, sie war schon nett und alles, aber die meiste Zeit hatte sie glaub ich keine Ahnung was sie da macht. Am Anfang hatte sie sogar Probleme grade zu fahren und ist mehrmals vom Track abgekommen und im Gebüsch gelandet. Sie hat sich auch nicht so richtig getraut ein bisschen Gas zu geben, daher mussten wir uns für die meiste Zeit ihrer Geschwindigkeit anpassen. Am Ende hat sie dann aber den Dreh rausgehabt und auch Spaß gehabt. Und Markus und ich haben auch Wege und Mittel gefunden um auf unsere Kosten zu kommen. Am Ende waren wir von Kopf bis Fuß mit Schlamm bedeckt... Der Trip war ein Riesenspaß und ich möchte das unbedingt bald nochmal machen.
