Kaikoura

From Hanmer Springs, we drove to Kaikoura which is only about a 2 hours drive.

I actually really like the place, probably because there is so much wildlife. I have to say I really miss seeing wild animals on a regular basis (like the kangaroos, wallabies, lizards and all those beautiful creatures in Australia).

Most of Kaikoura's "obvious" wildlife is seals: they just lie around everywhere (not only at the beach but also on car parks or grass areas) and are so used to people that they are not bothered at all. You can get up really close and they just look at you (if that!) and keep on snoozing.

You can also go on boat trips to see dolphins and whales but we haven't done that yet as they are quite expensive... I definitely want to do it though. Some time...

The highlight of Kaikoura is a place called Ohau Stream. It is a tiny little stream leading from the ocean to a little pool in the midst of a forest area. Seal pups wander up-stream and spent their time in the little pool to wait for mum's return while she is out at sea fishing. She can be out for about 3 days in a row. It's the most amazing place with dozens of little seals jumping, playing and rolling around in the water. If it hadn't been so cold you could have easily spent a whole day watching them. So cute!

We spent about 3 or 4 days in Kaikoura enjoying the beautiful weather for a change. There will be more pictures than words in this post as most of the pictures don't need any further words :) Have fun looking at the picutres!

Von Hanmer Springs aus sind wir nach Kaikoura gefahren, was nur ca 2 Stunden entfernt ist. Der Ort gefällt mir wirklich gut, wahrscheinlich weil es dort so viele Tiere zu sehen gibt. Ich muss sagen, dass mir die täglichen Tier-Begegnungen sehr fehlen (wie in Australien die Kängurus, Wallabies, Echsen und all die schönen Kreaturen...).

Die "offensichtlichsten" Tiere, die man in Kaikoura wirklich an jeder Ecke findet, sind Seehunde. Die liegen überall rum (nicht nur am Strand, sondern auch auf Parkplätzen und Wiesen und dergleichen). Sie sind so an Menschen gewöhnt, dass man ziemlich nah an sie rangehen kann, ohne dass es sie stört. Wenn sie überhaupt mal hochgucken, dösen sie aber sofort weiter.

Man kann in Kaikoura auch Bootstouren machen, um Delfine und Wale zu sehen, aber das haben wir noch nicht gemacht, weil es doch recht teuer ist. Will ich aber auf jeden Fall noch machen. Irgendwann...

Das Highlight von Kaikoura ist (für mich jedenfalls) ein Ort namens Ohau Stream. Das ist ein winziger Bach der vom Meer zu einem kleinen Pool mitten im Wald führt. Seehund-Babies robben den Bach entlang bis zum Pool, wo sie dann auf Mama's Rückkehr warten, bis diese von der Fischjagd auf offener See zurückkehrt. Das kann manchmal bis zu 3 Tagen dauern. Der Ort ist unglaublich - mit Duzenden von kleinen Seehunden, die durchs Wasser springen, rollen und spielen. Wenn's nicht so kalt gewesen wäre, hätte man dort den ganzen Tag verbringen können um sie zu beobachten. So niedlich! Oder wie Markus sagen würde: mei liab! :)

Wir haben 3 oder 4 Tage in Kaikoura verbracht und das, zur Abwechslung mal richtig schöne, Wetter genossen. In diesem Post gibt es deutlich mehr Fotos als Worte da die meisten Fotos keiner weiteren Worte benötigen. :) Viel Spaß beim Anschauen der Bilder!

At the DoC (Department of Conservation) camp spot about 20 km out of town.

One late afternoon, we decided to go on a walk across the Kaikoura Peninsula to try to find a spot from where to see penguins. Unfortunately, we didn't see any (apart from 2 dead ones) :(

We saw more seals though which was nice, too. And the walk was a really beautiful one.

An einem späten Nachmittag sind wir auf einen Walk über die Kaikoura Halbinsel gegangen, um einen Ort zu finden, wo man angeblich Pinguine sehen konnte. Leider haben wir aber keine gesehen (außer 2 Tote). :(

Wir haben aber mehr Seehunde gesehen, was auch gut war. Und der Walk an sich war auch richtig schön.

The best place to meet the animals (in this case New Zealand Fur Seals) up close is at Point Kean car park just a few minutes drive from the town centre. There is a wooden walkway from where it is really easy to see them. We went there a couple of times and the second time a huge male seal blocked the entrance to the walkway. He seemed comfortable enough. :)

Der beste Ort um diese Tiere richtig aus der Nähe zu betrachten ist wohl der Parkplatz bei Point Kean, ein paar Minuten vom Stadtzentrum entfernt. Es gibt dort einen Holzsteg, von wo aus es wirklich leicht ist, sie zu sehen. Diese hier sind übrigens New Zealand Fur Seals. Wir waren mehrmals dort und beim zweiten Mal hat dieser Brocken den Eingang zum Steg blockiert. Er hatte es anscheinend aber sehr bequem. :)
