Bevor ich meinen nächsten Reisebericht hier reinstelle, muss ich doch zumindest ein paar Eindruecke der 5-monatigen Arbeitsphase in Cromwell teilen.

Most of the time we worked for Mt Edwards as you know. It was an organic vineyard, so lots of the work was hand weeding, digging stuff, fertilizing, but also planting new vines and then of course bud rubbing and shoot thinning. Lots and lots of it. For those of you who don't know what any of this means: bud rubbing is the fun task to rub away all the unwanted buds and little shoots at the bottom of the trunk. Shoot thinning on the other hand is removing extra shoots on the arms. Snap...snap...snap... and rub...rub...rub...
Die längste Zeit haben wir ja, wie ihr wisst, fuer Mt Edwards gearbeitet. Es war ein organisches Weingut, daher war ein grosser Bestandteil der Arbeit Unkraut jähten, irgendwas umgraben, duengen, aber auch neuen Wein pflanzen und dann natuerlich bud rubbing und shoot thinning. Haufenweise davon. Fuer diejenigen unter euch, die nichts damit anfagen koennen: Bud rubbing ist die spassige Aufgabe, alle unerwuenschten Knospen und kleine Sprösslinge am unteren Ende des Stammes abzureiben. Shoot thinning auf der anderen Seite ist das Entfernen von ueberschuessigen Sprösslingen an den beiden Armen des Weins. Knips...knips...knips.. und rubbeln...rubbeln...rubbeln..

On some days, our boss also had some "fun" tasks which could mean pretty much anything. Here is a little summary ranked in the order of most "fun":
An manchen Tagen hatte unser Boss ein paar spezielle "Fun" Jobs, was praktisch alles heissen konnte. Hier ist eine kleine Uebersicht der Jobs, sortiert nach dem meisten "Spass":
5th place: cleaning out the chicken coop (with a mask at least) and re-arranging the compost/dung pile
Platz 5: Säubern des Huehnerhauses und umschichten des Misthaufens
4th place: Mustering highland cattle (moving them from one paddock to another) - have you noticed their horns??? To hold your ground when one of those huge things is running towards you...
Platz 4: Highland cattle von einem ins andere Gehege bewegen. Habt ihr die Hörner gesehen????? DA die Stellung zu halten, wenn so ein riesen Vieh auf einen zurennt....
3rd place: picking up the droppings of our beautiful highland cattle and collect it in a bin for the later use as fertilizer
Platz 3: Das Aufsammeln der Hinterlassenschaften unseres schönen Highland Cattles in eine Tonne um sie zum späteren Duengen zu verwenden
2nd place: scooping out that same bin after it had been sitting in the sun to ferment for a few weeks and pouring a scoop onto each vine. We were standing on the trailer behind the bin and I am sure Tim, our boss, hit the breaks too hard on purpose quite a few times to get us all splashed with that beautiful stuff...
Platz 2: Mit einem Becher eben diese Tonne (nachdem sie fuer mehrere Wochen in der Sonne gestanden hat um zu fermentieren) leerschaufeln und einen Becher pro Wein verteilen. Wir standen auf dem Anhänger direkt hinter der Tonne und ich bin sicher unser Boss hat ein paar Mal absichtlich zu hart auf die Bremse getreten, um uns mit dem wundervollen Zeugs vollzuspritzen.
1st place (undeniable WINNER): shoveling out a grave and burying pig entrails... yes, you are reading correctly...
Platz 1 und unschlagbarer Sieger: ein Grab ausheben um darin Schweinegedärme zu verbuddeln... ja, ihr lest richtig...

After Markus' and my Christmas trip, we went back to Bannockburn to pick cherries for about a month. The work was fairly easy and not bad money. After the first week, we were joined by my friend Juuli, with whom I had travelled in Australia for 8 months. :) Welcome Juuli!!!
Nachdem Markus und ich unseren Christmas Trip beendet hatten, sind wir zurueck nach Bannockburn um dort fuer ca einen Monat Kirschen zu pfluecken. Nach der ersten Woche ist meine Freundin aus Finnland dazugekommen. Mit ihr bin ich ja schon 8 Monate in Australien unterwegs gewesen. :) Willkommen Juuli!!
