On Thursday, 16th of August, we finally left Auckland after having spent two weeks at Steve's place. Thanks again for everything Steve! Much appreciated... :)
Our initial plan had been to drive down to the south island first while it's still cold anyway and then come back to the north island when it's warm. We intended to have some stops on the way to Welligton, have a look at lake Taupo for example and some other things but the weather kind of ruined that plan. Ever since we had left Auckland, the rain was following us EVERYWHERE... So, instead of going to Taupo ,we went to Waitomo to find some walk-in glow worm caves Steve had mentioned to us. Yet again, the weather had different plans. It was pouring down so neither of us felt like going for a walk or leaving the van at all as a matter of fact. We do want to come back in summer for some caving up there though. For those who have been following my blog from the beginning, you still might remember the pictures of the glow worm caves I posted from when I very first came to Australia and went to New Zealand for holidays. Am Donnerstag, den 16. August sind wir dann schließlich und endlich von Auckland losgefahren, nachdem wir 2 Wochen bei Steve verbracht haben. Danke nochmal für alles Steve! Wir wissen das sehr zu schätzen!
Unser ursprünglicher Plan war es erstmal zur Südinsel zu fahren, so lange es eh noch kalt ist und dann wieder hoch zur Nordinsel zu kommen, wenn es wärmer ist. Unterwegs wollten wir eigentlich ein paar Stopps machen und z.B Lake Taupo angucken und noch ein paar andere Dinge, doch leider hat das Wetter uns einen Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht. Seit wir aus Auckland raus waren, hat uns der Regen begleitet! Und zwar überall hin... Wir wollten daher, anstatt zum Lake Taupo zu fahren, nur kurz so Glühwürmchen-Höhlen bei Waitome anschauen, in die man einfach so reingehen kann ohne zu bezahlen und ohne Führung, doch auch hier kam der Regen dazwischen. Es hat so doll geschüttet, dass keiner von uns wirklich Lust auf einen Spaziergang hatte oder auch nur den Van verlassen wollte. Auch hierher wollen wir im Sommer nochmal zurück kommen um eine der vielen Höhlentouren zu machen. Diejenigen, die meinen Blog schon seit dem Anfang verfolgen, können sich vielleicht noch an die Bilder von den Höhlen erinnern, die ich reingestellt hatte, als ich grade in Australien angekommen war und für Ferien nach Neuseeland geflogen war. Anyway, so now the plan was to just leave everything on the north island for when the weather would be better. We followed down State Highway 1 and 4 all the way to a place called Wanganui (in the south west), where we had the car serviced for the first time. We were a bit nervous, as it was the first big check up but luckily, the mechanic told us that it was quite a good van. Phew!
The only thing that's not working as it should (but we noticed that before the service of course) is the speedometer and the heater. The heater, very much to my regret, is not working at all. So, whenever the windows fog up, which they do a lot when it's cold and raining, we have to switch on the ventilation/air con which means we sit inside, freezing. Ironically, in Australia it was the other way round. Whenever the car ran hot, we had to turn on the heater to cool down the engine. Nice when you have 42°C outside... we were boiling!
Wie auch immer, der Plan war jetzt also einfach mal alles auf der Nordinsel zu überspringen, bis das Wetter schöner würde. Wir sind über den State Highway 1 und 4 bis ganz runter in den Südwesten gefahren, zu einem Ort der Wanganui heißt. Dort hatten wir das Auto beim Mechaniker um den ersten Service (Inspektion) machen zu lassen. Wir waren etwas nervös, weil wir jetzt rausfinden würden, ob das Auto irgendwelche schwerwiegenden Probleme hat. Zum Glück war das Ergebnis aber positiv und der Mechaniker meinte zu uns, dass wir einen guten Van gekauft hätten. Puh!
Das Einzige was nicht so funktioniert, wie es sollte sind der Tacho und die Heizung - aber das wussten wir auch schon vor dem Service. Die Heizung funktioniert, sehr zu meinem Leidwesen, überhaupt nicht. D.h. wenn die Scheiben beschlagen und wir die Lüftung anmachen müssen bläst uns eisige Luft entgegen.Ironischer Weise war es in Australien genau umgekehrt. Wann immer das Auto zu heiß lief, mussten wir die Heizung aufdrehen, um den Motor zu kühlen. Toll, wenn's draußen 42°C hat... wie in der Sauna! | ||

On the way down, we stayed on rest areas along the highway. I have to say that those are quite a disappointment after having been used to the fabulous rest areas in Australia where they are really designed for letting you have a nice stay. Here, however, they are mostly right next to the highway and more like parking bays. Some even have signs saying "no overnight stay"... We're still getting our heads around that. We've heard, too, that the rangers here are meant to be quite strict and will fine you pretty much immediately if they catch you in places where you're not meant to be. So far, touch wood, we've been lucky enough not to get caught. Maybe it's because it is winter after all and there's not all that many travellers about so no one cares...
Auf dem Weg nach Süden sind wir einfach auf Rastplätzen entlang des Highways geblieben. Allerdings muss ich sagen, dass diese ziemlich enttäuschend sind, vorallem wenn man an die - wirklich hervorragenden - rest areas von Australien gewöhnt ist, die einen wirklich zum Bleiben einladen. Hier hingegen sind sie meistens direkt neben der Straße, eher wie Parkbuchten. Manche haben sogar Schilder, auf denen "Kein Übernachten" steht... Da müssen wir uns irgendwie noch dran gewöhnen. Wir haben auch gehört, dass die Ranger (also sowas wie Ordnungshüter aber für Umwelt) hier ziemlich streng sein sollen und man Strafe zahlen muss, wenn sie einen erwischen, wo man nicht sein sollte. Bisher haben wir aber, teu teu teu, Glück gehabt und wurden nicht erwischt. Vielleicht weil Winter ist und gar nicht so viele Reisende unterwegs sind und es daher keinen kümmert...

From Wanganui, we continued to Wellington. On the way, just before you come into Levin, there was a Lord of the Rings filming location which we wanted to see. When we got to the little townhip of Waitarere, a nice lady in the local bakery described how to get to the location but she already said it wouldn't look like it used to anymore. For those of you who like the films as well: it was from the scene in the forest where Arwen gets Frodo after he had been stabbed at Weathertop. We got to the place the lady described, but found it impossible to make out the very spot. Somewhere in the Waitarere Forest. :)
Von Wanganui aus sind wir weiter Richtung Wellington gefahren. Auf dem Weg, kurz bevor man nach Levin reinkommt, war eine Herr der Ringe Filming Location, die wir sehen wollten. Als wir im kleinen Dorf, Waitarere, in der Bäckerei gefragt haben wo die Stelle ist, hat uns die nette Frau erklärt, wo wir hin müssen und meinte aber schon, dass es gar nicht mehr so aussehen würde wie im Film. Für diejenigen, die die Filme mögen: es ging um die Szene im Wald, wo Arwen Frodo holt, nachdem er bei der Wetterspitze von einem der Nazgul angegriffen worden war. Wir sind zu der beschriebenen Stelle gefahren, aber es war tatsächlich unmöglich den genauen Spot zu bestimmen. Irgendwo im Waitarere Forest. :)

We came into Wellington on Sunday noon and had a look around for a bit. When I was in New Zealand in 2009/10 I spent most of that one month in Wellington. I still really like the city and when we come back to the north island in summer, we want to have some time there again. This time, we only stayed half a day, as we had tickets for the ferry crossing to Picton (south island) for that same night. The ferry left Wellington at around 8pm and arrived in Picton just after 11pm. I'm looking forward to doing the crossing again in daylight though, as I remember it to have been absolutely gorgeous with the ferry coming into the sounds. Next time!
Now, let's see what the south island has to offer... :)
In Wellington selbst sind wir am Sonntag mittag angekommen. Als ich 2009/10 in Neuseeland war, hab ich von dem einen Monat eigentlich die meiste Zeit in Wellington verbracht. Ich mag die Stadt immer noch sehr und wenn wir wieder zurück auf die Nordinsel kommen, wollen wir auf jeden Fall auch mehr Zeit dort haben. Diesmal haben wir nur ca einen halben Tag in der Stadt verbracht, bevor wir zum Hafen sind. Wir hatten nämlich noch am selben Abend Tickets für die Überfahrt nach Picton (Südinsel). Die Fähre hat um 20 Uhr in Wellington abgelegt und ist ca um 23 Uhr in Picton angekommen. Ich freu mich allerdings schon drauf, die Überfahrt nochmal im Hellen zu machen, da ich mich noch erinnern kann wie unglaublich schön es war, als die Fähre sich den Weg durch die Fjordlandschaft nach Picton gebahnt hat. Nächstes Mal!
Jetzt werden wir mal schauen, was die Südinsel zu bieten hat... :) Now, this post is not quite up to date but the next one is "under construction" :)
