After a few troubles in the beginnig, we are finally pretty much ready to hit the road. We have spent the first two weeks in New Zealand in Auckland, waiting for the money (of the car that we sold in Australia) to come through and then buying and setting up a van to go travelling in. During that time, we stayed with a Maori guy named Steve, who was really helpful. It was a funny incident that led us to him: he was selling a car for another backpacker who had gone home to France and had left the car with Steve, as he wasn't able to sell it quick enough. So, we actually, while trying to find a suitable van for us, replied to his add on gumtree (an internet platform). When we talked to him, he offered us to stay in his spare room for a lot less money than we'd have had to pay at a hostel. We gladly accepted and moved in. The van he showed us the following day didn't appeal to us as it was really quite short and quite crowded for living in it for the next 8 months or so. Steve didn't mind though. He didn't kick us out of the room when we told him we didn't want to buy the car.
Nach ein paar anfänglichen Schwierigkeiten sind wir jetzt mehr oder weniger bereit, durchzustarten. Wir haben die ersten 2 Wochen hier in Auckland verbracht und darauf gewartet, dass das Geld vom Autoverkauf in Australien durch kam, dann davon einen Van zu kaufen und so herzurichten, dass er uns gefällt. Während dieser Zeit sind wir bei einem Maori namens Steve untergekommen, der sich als sehr hilfreich erwies. Zu ihm sind wir durch einen witzigen Zufall gekommen: er hatte im Internet auch einen Van annonciert, den er, wie sich später rausstellte, für einen Backpacker verkaufte, der schon zurück nach Frankreich geflogen war und ihn nicht verkaufen konnte. Auf unserer Suche nach einem Van für uns, haben wir ihn angerufen um den Van zu besichtigen. Beim Telefonat hat er uns direkt angeboten, dass wir bei ihm im Gästezimmer bleiben könnten, wenn wir nichts hätten, wo wir bleiben konnten. Da es wesentlich günstiger war, als z.B. ein Hostel haben wir dankend angenommen. Der Van, den er uns dann am nächsten Tag gezeigt hat, hat uns nicht so gut gefallen, da er schon ziemlich klein war und zu eng um die nächsten 8 Monate drin zu leben. Steve war das aber auch egal. Er hat uns nicht rausgeworfen, nur weil wir den Van nicht kaufen wollten.
We moved in on a Tuesday and spent the first few days searching the internet and car fairs and all that for a van that we liked and could afford. In the end, we went for a Nissan Caravan which is really quite a big van. The one we chose was not really flash and not well set up but we still liked it a lot and saw the potential (what we could do with it) so as to set it up the way we liked it.
Wir sind an einem Dienstag eingezogen und haben die nächsten paar Tage damit verbracht, das Internet und Auto-Märkte nach einem geeigneten Van zu durchforsten. Schließlich haben wir uns für einen Nissan Caravan entschieden, einen recht großen Van. Er war zwar nicht besonders funkelnd und hatte auch keine tolle Ausstattung, aber wir haben sein "Potenzial" erkannt; also das, was wir draus machen könnten.
We bought it and spent the next few days driving back and forth from Bunnings Warehouse (a DIY hardware store).
We took apart the so called "set up" the van had. Really, it was only a hastily built bed-like area in the back. The panels they used came in pretty handy for us though.
We had the idea to build two big storage boxes in the back of the van which would also serve as benches during the day and as the sleeping area during the night. For the middle bit we created a table that would come down at night to fill the gap between the boxes. The cushions on the benches will serve as the mattress.
For the front part of the van, we were going to built some kind of kitchen but in the end decided to just go for a kit from the warehouse.
Wir haben ihn also gekauft und die nächsten paar Tage damit verbracht zwischen zu Hause und dem Baumarkt, Bunnings Warehouse, hin und her zu fahren. Wir haben das sogenannte Set up, das der Van hatte, auseinander genommen. Eigentlich war es auch wirklich nur eine hastig zusammengezimmerte Holzfläche, auf der man schlafen konnte. Die Holzplatten konnten wir aber wenigstens gut gebrauchen. Wir hatten uns überlegt, hinten in den Van zwei große Kisten zu bauen, die als Stauraum, Sitzbänke für tags und Liegefläche für nachts verwendet werden können. Für die Mitte haben wir uns einen Tisch ausgedacht, der nachts die Lücke zwischen den Kisten füllt, so dass eine große Schlaffläche entsteht. Die Polster auf den Bänken werden dann zur Matratze.
Für den vorderen Bereich des Vans wollten wir eigentlich eine kleine Küchenzeile bauen, haben uns dann aber für einen Bausatz aus dem Möbelhaus entschieden.
All in all it looks really nice and comfortable now and we're quite excited to test it out. :)
